The Bonitor MP302 Pico Projector ($289 direct) is a tiny, glossy white pico projector that's compatible not just with Windows PCs but with Macs, a rarity among pocket projectors. It can show photos and videos from its modest internal memory, or emulate your computer's screen over a USB connection. Bonitor pegs it as a consumer-oriented model—mostly for watching videos or perusing photos—that can also run business presentations off a laptop. In testing, however, it presented enough functional and performance problems to make my experience with it notably frustrating.

The glossy white MP302 uses a three-LED (red-green-blue) light source and LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) projection technology, and is rated at 15 lumens. It measures 3.9 by 2.1 inches, is just under an inch thick, and weighs 3.9 ounces. Its sole connection is a USB port, for linking to your computer via the included dual USB cable that plugs into two of your computer's USB ports to provide both power and data.

DLP Pico nHD chip announced

The leading developers of the technology used in every major brand of projector have unveiled a pioneering new chip that will allow projectors to be shrunk to even smaller sizes.

Texas Instruments – the company that makes the crucial digital light processing, or DLP, chips – launched a new DLP Pico chip at last week's IFA Berlin consumer electronics show.

The tiny chip, which has been called the nHD chip, is only around the size of a raisin but has proven extremely effective in projecting images with resolutions of up 640x360 pixels. The size of the chip is likely to make pico projectors a much more commonplace feature in gadgets such as cameras, mobile phones and portable games consoles.

Texas Instruments says the new model gives a much-improved contrast ratio of 1000:1 for much darker black tones and a richer colour spectrum. It will also significantly lower the power consumption of devices using it, compared to older projection technology.

Weighing in at 210g, the device aims at super portability and hopes to appeal to those of you who are employed with that oh-so-joyous task of performing presentations.

The detachable battery will apparently last up to the 2-hour mark in Eco mode (no word on battery life when not in "eco" mode) which should be just enough for presentations, but if you want to watch movies it sounds like you'll need to hunt for a power socket.

3M Mpro 150 Pico Projector

The MPro 150 is astonishingly minute, weighing a mere 158g. Yes, that’s great for Bond-loving execs looking to mimic Q’s own mini-gadget filled briefcase, but what we’re really after here is image quality. Tucked inside the MPr0 150’s minuscule shell is its MM200 optical engine, which uses an advanced liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) system where most use a DLP engine. 3M claims that this gives you a full colour gamut (reproduction).

Unfortunately, we found the MPro 150’s pictures extremely lacking in brightness. There’s a bit more lumination than the similarly sized Optoma PK101 (the MPro packs 15 lumens) but it still yields flat and lifeless pictures. We suggest you don’t dare increase the picture size over 35in and be sure to turn off or black-out any light source you can find. Otherwise it’s fuzzy heaven.

Samsung Galaxy Beam: AMOLED touch screen, Android OS, projector

Samsung, which has been making serious plays in the smartphone world, has announced that their "Beam" phone, which has Android and a built-in projector, will soon be shipping.

The phone itself is a real spectacle. It has a 3.7" touchscreen (Super AMOLED display), Android 2.1, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS, 802.11n Wi-Fi, an 8MP phone, FM radio, microSD slot and yes, a DLP-based pico projector. It's certainly a never-before-seen set of specifications, and the battery life of 7 hours of talk time is also fairly unheard of.

Favi is releasing a pair some time between late February and early March for prices yet unknown. First is the RIOLED-Q (pictured) which sports a pretty 800 x 600 native resolution at 50 lumens -- supposedly the best brightness in class (like the Optoma PK301), along with built-in SD / MMC card reader, battery, three-watt stereo speaker and an ever-so-handy digital keystone correction. Joining the party is the smaller RIOLED-V which is shy about its display specification, but proudly packs a card reader and WiFi to cater its various web apps for YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, Yahoo News, Weather, Email, Internet Radio and web browser.

RoyalTek RPJ-2000 pico projector

RoyalTek's maiden entry into the pico projector market has resulted in the RPJ-2000, where this standalone projector sans internal memory will rely on 3M's 2nd-generation LCoS engine. Out in Taiwan and Europe, this model has received the go ahead from Apple to be used with the iPhone and iPod. It runs quietly thanks to Quanta's fanless technology, and retails for around 219 Euros across the Atlantic for the basic model. iPhone and iPod owners who want to hook up their devices to this will have to fork out another 30 Euros for a connectivity kit. RoyalTek has targeted a 60,000 unit sales in 2010.

Light Blue Optics "Light Touch" coming to CES?

Light Blue Optics are rumored to launch their first product, the “Light Touch” at CES (Jan 6th).

LBO’s pico projector modules are Holographic Laser-based, and apparently allow the user to touch the projected image to provide user input.

Their modules support WVGA-QVGA images at 10 lumens. LBO’s proprietary technology has an ultra-wide throw angle and the ability to correct for optical aberrations using software. The projectors can switch between conventional front projection onto a wall and a novel table-down projection mode where the device is placed on a table and the content is projected down onto the surface in front of it. LBO has recently raised $15 million.

LG eXpo projector accessory unboxing video

The eXpo is a Windows Mobile 6.5 QWERTY slider handset offering the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (a la the TG01 and the HTC HD2). AT&T is currently offering the phone for $300 on a 2-year contract.

Other specs for the eXpo include a 3.2-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a microSD slot for up to 16GB cards.

AAXA M1 micro-projector

Two models will be on offer, each capable of projecting up to a 100-inch picture. The entry-level M1 Standard gets a 3.5mm composite video input (complete with a suitable adapter cable), a native SVGA 800 x 600 resolution, 66 lumen brightness from its LED lighting, and a handy remote control, while the M1 Plus adds a 1280 x 960 VGA input (though you’ll obviously only get 800 x 600 max output); both also have 3.5mm headphone jacks and a microUSB port. Eventually, AAXA say, you’ll be able to use that USB connection to hook up a computer, though right now they’re not providing the necessary drivers.

Otherwise there’s 1GB of onboard storage and an SD card reader, integrated media player app and stereo 1W speakers; the whole thing measures 112 x 105 x 46 mm. Each model is available for preorder now, priced at $299 for the AAXA M1 Standard and $359 for the AAXA M1 Plus. They’ll ship on December 21st and January 21st respectively.

Microvision and Intel create gaming rig with Show WX pico projector

Players of first-person shooter computer games traditionally play while seated with a keyboard, mouse, and fixed monitor.
However, these hardcore gamers soon may be unleashed from their stationary position to enjoy a realistic virtual combat experience with life-sized video images, projected on walls, ceilings and floors, all from a weapon-styled projection game controller they hold in their hands.

Among the first consumers to try a prototype of such a product will be the players and spectators attending the Intel(R) Extreme Masters PC gaming tournament in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday, Dec. 11 through Sunday, Dec. 13. Intel Corp., sponsor of the event, has invited laser display technology supplier Microvision, Inc. (NASDAQ: MVIS), of Redmond, Wash., to give gamers a first look at a new technology that projects a follow-you-anywhere video image - up to 200 inches across - from a handheld game controller.

Game players at the tourney who give the prototype a spin will experience "an immersive, 360-degree feel," promises Ian Brown, Microvision's Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "The company's laser projection engine can show a distortion-free image on nearly any flat or curved surface. Consequently, the game goes along with the gamer and reflects the character's position in three-dimensional space."

It's no coincidence that Microvision also happens to be a main mover behind the emerging consumer-electronics product category known as "pico projectors." In September, the company started shipping its first SHOWWX(TM) laser pico projectors - based on its PicoP(R) display engine - to customers in the Asia Pacific region and Europe. But the game tournament demo in Canada will show off the versatility of Microvision's PicoP display engine beyond the streaming movies, music videos, camera-phone snapshots and business presentations which are the media most likely to be shown with pico projectors.

Designed to connect easily to any Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, or Sony PS2 or PS3, the Brightboxe promises a 480p resolution and a 500:1 contrast ratio. It also uses pure RGB LEDs as a light source, so it never needs lamp replacement. Under normal lighting conditions, the Brightboxe can crank out a 60-inch image. For anyone who's been tracking the progress of pico projectors, this amazing little device will be seen as something akin to the holy grail.
Despite its pocket-sized dimensions, it's somehow able to throw out a 100in pin-sharp picture at 800x400 resolution with an impressive brightness rating of 45 lumens.
As well as being able to connect to your laptop, console, iPod or phone, the 305 also has its own built-in media player capable of handling MPEG and AVI files from the generous 4GB of onboard memory.
For even more storage, there's an SD Card slot and there's even a cute little tripod for keeping things steady.
The media player struggled with some DIVX files I tried, while the two-hour battery life means movie fans are going to have to have it rigged up to the mains.
However, this doesn't diminish the fact that the Adapt 305 is far and away the best projector of this type I've tried.

HYPOLED develops mega-tiny VGA projector display

HYPOLED, an 18-month-old project tasked with creating OLED microdisplays for upcoming pico projectors, has just released a report of its recent progress. Among the advances is a Fraunhofer IPMS-designed all digital VGA, full color OLED microdisplay backplane with matching pico projector optics. The display measures just 0.18-mm thick and is already in prototype manufacturing. The super miniscule display is connected to a MediaBox enabling it to operate via WiFi. Fraunhofer is now expected to begin developing a prototype of the full projector.

Model PK 100 ($199 estimated retail) is billed as a more simplified version of the miniature DLP-based Pico projectors the company has introduced in the past.

The new model is designed for general purpose use and features composite-video inputs for connection to similarly configured digital cameras, game consoles movie cameras and similar devices.
The projector is expected to be broadly distributed, especially through Optoma's online retail partners, according to Jon Grodem, Optoma's product marketing director.

The unit features the same tiny .17 DLP DMD chip used in Optoma's earlier models, and is powered by three LED lamps (red, green and blue) capable of outputting up to 11 ANSI lumens of brightness at a 1,000:1 contrast ratio.

The PK 100 will join the previously introduced PK 101 ($229) and PK 102 ($249) models.
In related news, Optoma said Apple has agreed to expand the distribution of the PK 101 model to up to 170 Apple stores nationwide beginning in October.

3M MPro120 Second-Generation Pico Projector

The MPro120 can be classified as a second-generation pico projector in that it replaces the MM100 projection engine of its predecessor, the 3M MPro110, with 3M's MM200 engine. The MM200 was initially shown at CES 2009 as a non-integrated component. Like the MM100 engine, the MM200 uses LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) technology.

According to 3M, the MM200 engine is able to achieve a clearer and crisper picture than the MM100. Battery life is extended up to between 2 and 4 hours, depending on brightness setting (up from 40 minutes in the MPro110). The new projector has a rated brightness of 12 lumens and lamp life is now rated at 20,000 hours. It also adds two integrated, half-watt stereo speakers.

The MPro120 is available since September 1, for an estimated street price of $350.

Pico projector market to take off in 2010

Demand for pico projectors is estimated to take off in 2010 with DLP and LCoS being the mainstream technologies, according to market observers.

The sources indicated that shipments of pico projectors are estimated to reach 420,000 units in 2009 and to 1.82 million units in 2010. The CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of the pico projector market is estimated to be 200% from 2009 to 2012, the sources added.

Pico projector module prices have dropped to US$30-150 from over US$200 previously, the sources said, adding that pico projectors will be adopted by more devices when the average selling prices (ASPs) drop below US$20, which is estimated to happen in 2010.

China white-box vendors have launched handsets equipped with LCoS pico projectors, stimulating demand with affordable prices, the sources said.

Pocket projectors—the category the Dell M109S falls into—have been around since late 2005. Not quite small enough to fit into most pockets (at least, not without risk of ripping the pocket), projectors in this category haven't been overwhelmingly successful—Mitsubishi, for instance, the first company to offer a pocket projector, doesn't currently sell one. But the M109S offers some benefits that earlier models didn't, including an even smaller size and lower weight, a slightly brighter image, and, most important, a lower price—all of which is enough for it to earn an Editors' Choice.

Don't confuse these palm-size pocket projectors with the new pico projectors that are just starting to become available. Pico projectors, which use an assortment of projection technologies, are literally small enough to fit into a camera or cell phone, with standalone versions that fit comfortably into a shirt pocket. The traditional pocket projector is really better described as palm-top or palm-size, which is what I'll call it here.

A touch smaller and lighter than earlier palm-size projectors, the M109S measures 1.5 by 3.6 by 4.1 inches (HWD) and weighs only 0.8 pound. Even with the power block and cables, the total weight comes out to less than 2 pounds. As with all palm-top projectors to date, the M109S is built around a DLP chip and an LED light source that's meant to last the life of the projector—a 10,000-hour lifetime in this case.

Setup is a bit unusual, but easy. The projector itself has only one connector. An octopus cable plugs into the projector and splits off into three separate cables—one for the power block, one with a VGA connector to plug into a computer, and one with a standard composite video connector. You simply connect the cables, turn everything on, and adjust the manual focus. There's no zoom control, but it's easy to adjust image size by moving the projector closer to or farther from the screen. (You can get a 40-inch-diagonal image from about 62 inches, or a 49-inch image from 75 inches.)

Ray Display Plans Low-Cost Pico Projectors

Startup Ray Display plans to launch a pico projector next month for $249, a company representative said Thursday, which it claims will be $100 less than the cheapest pico projectors already on the market.

The Ray representative said that the compact projector will go on sale in mid-September, so the company has some time to adjust its pricing strategy. And, for right now, the price Ray is talking about is indeed cheaper than most.

Ray has confirmed that it will offer 640 x 480 resolution with a throw distance up to 70 inches, and the company's Web site confirms that it includes a super-efficient LED light bulb rated for 20,000 hours of use.

Nikon VP650 pico-projector camera: September release

Nikon are tipped to be preparing a digital camera with integrated pico-projector, capable of not only snapping images but projecting them at up to a claimed 8 x 12 inches.

They also suggest that the LED pico-projector components are supplied by FoxLink, a Taiwanese company previously linked with putting pico components into mobile phones.

The Nikon VP650 is expected to be announced this month, with a release predicted for September. No word on what sort of price tag it might carry, nor if VP650 will be the final model name or simply the internal codename.

Young Optics lowers pico projector revenue goal for 2009

Taiwan-based light engine maker Young Optics, a subsidiary of backlight unit (BLU) maker Coretronic, has lowered pico projectors' estimated share of revenues to 5% from 19% for 2009, according to the company.

Young Optics indicated that the company shipments of pico projectors have been weaker than expected due to delays in clients' product launches, as well as high prices of pico projectors.

According to research firm PMA, pico projector shipments are estimated to reach 420,000 units in 2009, exceed 1.8 million units in 2010, 7.6 million units in 2011, and over 17 million units in 2012.

However, Young Optics noted that judging from the current market situation, pico projector shipments in 2009 are unlikely to reach 420,000 units. The company said that the pico projector market will take off when module prices drop to US$50 each in 2010.

The company has posted July consolidated revenues of NT$405.99 million (US$12.32 million), down 24.91% from NT$540.66 million for June and down 47.4% from NT$771.92 million for July 2008, according to data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE). Accumulated revenues from January to July totaled NT$3.29 billion, down 18.91% on year.

The smallest, lightest projectors today are small enough so you can bring one along without a second thought, stuffing it into a briefcase or even a pocket. However, some compromises go along with the small size—notably low brightness levels. If you're thinking about getting a small projector, considering these questions first will help you pick the right one.

How Portable Does It Have To Be?

The smallest projectors today fall into two categories: palm-top and pico. There's some confusion about the categories, because most manufacturers call palm-tops pocket projectors. But with dimensions that top out at about 2.5 by a little more than 5 by 5 inches, the pocket description is more metaphorical than real. Pico projectors, on the other hand, are comparable to a cell phone in size and weight, so they can easily fit in a shirt pocket. Palm-tops are portable enough to carry with you easily when you need them. Pico projectors are small and light enough to carry all the time.

Some of these projectors also enhance their portability by being able to read files directly from a USB memory key. Ask yourself whether taking advantage of that feature will let you leave your computer at home. If so, a somewhat larger and heavier projector with a USB reader feature can be more portable in a practical sense than a lighter projector that won't work without your computer.

Mini OLED projector prototype

A new mini projector prototype could see mobile phone users hosting impromptu movie screenings on makeshift screens such as white towels or walls... without killing the battery. Unlike conventional projectors the prototype doesn’t need an additional illumination system. Instead it relies on a lens system to project images produced by an OLED onto a wall or other flat surface.

Operating without an extra light source offers the dual benefits of reduced size and energy requirements. The prototype is 2.5 cm long, has a diameter of 1.8 cm and needs very little energy. This means the projector could be easily integrated into a mobile phone or PDA without overtaxing the devices’ battery.

Currently the prototype’s OLED display produces a monochrome image with a brightness of 10,000 candelas per square meter, and color images about half that level. By way of comparison, a computer monitor generates about 150-300 candelas per square meter.

The lenses used in the prototype are made of glass, but the development team is working on an optical system that uses plastic lenses. This is because plastic lenses can be embossed, so they can be produced in larger quantities more simply and cheaply than glass lenses.

The mini projector was developed by research scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena in cooperation with their partners in the EU project HYPOLED.

Pico projecters were all the rage last month at Taiwan's giant Computex show, with Life Technologies showing its DigiLife DDV-JF1 pico-projector-equipped digicam and other pico projectors on the way from Aiptek, Optoma, and others.

Microvision of Redmond, Washington has been demoing its laser-based ShowWX pico projector for quite some time, with a release both as a Microvision-branded product and as a OEM subsystem planned for later this year - a deadline aided by Corning's recent announcement that it can now provide Microvision with green lasers in mass-manufacturing quantities.

Microvision's ShowWX has the distinct advantage over other pico-projector designs of not needing a focusing lens, as do competing technologies such as Texas Instruments' DLP, 3M's LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon), and Displaytech's FLCOS (ferroelectric LCOS).

Optoma picked an appropriate moniker for its Lilliputian-size video projector. The Pico PK101 isn't just small, it's almost inconceivably tiny. It measures just 1.97 inches wide by 4.06 inches long by 0.59 inches thick, and it weighs only four ounces.

Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processor) technology deserves much of the credit for making such a product possible. DLP projectors create an image by bouncing light off microscopic mirrors arranged in a matrix on a semiconductor. Each mirror represents a pixel in the image and swivels to either reflect light through the lens or to an internal heatsink. Toggling these two states on and off creates a grayscale. Color pixels are created by using either a color wheel or a colored light source. Optoma uses a non-replaceable LED for its light source, which it claims should last for 20,000 hours. There’s a tiny speaker and a 0.5-watt amp onboard, too.

In addition to its Li-Ion battery, the Pico PK101 can operate on AC or USB power (we used the USB port on a Metadot Das Keyboard). Optoma claims a fully charged battery should last 90 minutes, but ours delivered only 67 minutes while playing a silent, looping slide show at the brighter of the projector’s two settings. Good thing it comes with a spare.

This projector is designed to be paired with a handheld media player and is outfitted with only an analog A/V input. You connect the projector to a source using either a special cable or an iPod docking-port adapter (both are included). If you want to connect the projector to a PC, the PC must be equipped with either a composite video output or a VGA output (connected to a VGA-to-composite adapter). That limitation pretty much rules out the device as a PowerPoint tool for the traveling businessperson, because a VGA signal converted to composite does a very poor job of displaying text.

Samsung has begun selling their MBP200 convergence device in Germany. Samsung has developed other convergence devices (items that serve multiple functions) and the MBP200's portable media player (PMP) and Pico projector combo doesn't disappoint. While not officially available in the US at this time, it can be purchased and delivered to US customers through online retailers.

A compact portable projector designed to connect directly to mobile phones and laptops the MBP200 brings presentations on the road - sometimes without the need for a laptop. The Pico Projector natively supports PDF and Microsoft Office standard file formats, so you can leave the laptop behind and instead store your presentation on a microSD (in capacities up to 16 GB).

Weighing in at just 160-grams, the Pico Projector is capable of projecting onto a surface as small as a sheet of paper with up to a 50-inch viewing area. Without cooling, I'm not sure how bright the MBP200 is (number of lumens), but for small presentations it's probably adequate and the cool factor is sure to impress.

Because the MBP200 also includes a 2.2-inch QVGA LCD, the device is also a PMP. In fact it's a 4-in-1 file/picture viewer and music/video player. The MBP200 is a no-brainer to pack for business and pleasure and if Samsung ever decides to incorporate a phone, WiFi and Bluetooth, I'd unload a drawer-full of old gear on eBay tomorrow.

The Show WX uses a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) two directional oscillating mirror, and three small laser diodes which are combined to create some of the most vivid colors the human eye can see. Unlike LED’s or high-intensity discharge bulbs, the lasers are always at a constant wavelength so light energy is rarely lost. When the lasers combine with the MEMS unit a processor tells the mirror to shoot one pixel of information at a time. So an image can even be projected onto uneven or curved surfaces. vnunet.com has just reviewed the Acer K10 pico projector and were fairly satisfied with it, except for the relatively low resolution and bulky power adapter brick.

Acer's K10 pico projector is designed to be small enough to be carried along with a laptop, enabling users such as travelling sales staff to give presentations at a customer site.

Announced in March and available to purchase now, the K10 is certainly small as far as projectors go, measuring roughly 12cm square and about 4.5cm high. It's about the same size as a bedside clock radio. It also weighs just half a kilogram, which should not prove too much of a burden to carry alongside a laptop computer.

Aiptek T20, T30: picoprojectors for iPhone

Aiptek at Computex provided looks at a pair of pico projectors both tailored to portable hardware. The T30 is the smallest and is intended for iPhones and iPods that need a larger view for video. While limited, it has the rare addition of an RGB LED that produces more accurate pictures than a typical white-light LED. Pictures scale up to as large as 50 inches depending on the throw distance, and it also assists in recording with an AV input.
The T20 is larger and crafted for notebooks but uses only the USB port for its signal; the move reduces expansion but obviates the need for a separate battery on the projector itself. It can only display at VGA (640x480) resolution but can put up images as large as 42 inches.
Both of Aiptek's projectors are due to ship by the end of the year and are likely to ship to the US.

The technology already exists in add-on form, but could need substantial shrinking in order to merge with a handheld. The DDV-JF1 shoots and displays 720p video on its 2.5-inch LCD display. As an added bonus, it has a built-in 640x360 pico projector. There is not much more information about the combo device, but the company plans to display it at Computex this month. Keep an eye open for more info and specs.

WowWee’s Cinemin Swivel pico-projector

WowWee’s Cinemin Swivel pico-projector, which was announced back at CES in January, has been given a release date and UK pricing. Expected to hit UK stores in September 2009, the posable projector will retail for around £349 ($572); US pricing and availability is still unknown, though it is expected in fall 2009 priced at $299.

Engadget shows the LG Monaco (Pico) cell phone with built in picoprojector.

Features: 3.6Mbps HSDPA, a 3.2-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel AF cam, microSD expansion, an add-on pico projector of some sort, and Windows Mobile 7. Though the screen is 0.3 inches smaller diagonally than the alleged minimum specified by Microsoft's "Chassis 1" guidelines, everything else here would work (and look) great as a next-gen device -- and the accessory projector's a pretty nifty selling point, too. At one point, AT&T had a crazy idea that they'd have this puppy on shelves by September of this year, but seeing we'll be lucky to have 6.5 devices in our hands by then, this date has undoubtedly slipped since the slide was made.

BenQ Joybee GP1 Reviewed

The hardware package is a mixed bag of success. The GP1 itself is an attractive, compact box measuring 5.4 by 4.7 by 2.1 inches and weighing just 1.4lbs, made from glossy fingerprint-loving black and white plastic and with a circle of touch-sensitive blue backlit buttons up top. Build quality seems good, and while there’s no sliding cover the lens is deeply recessed into the body of the projector.

Less pleasing is the PSU brick, which is around half the size of the pico-projector itself and has no space in the included soft case. That wouldn’t be so frustrating if it wasn’t for the fact that the GP1 has no internal battery and so will always need an external power supply. The remote, too, is ugly and doesn’t follow the same button layout as the touch-keys.

AAXA P1 pico projector reviewed

Right out the box, the lightweight pico-projector doesn’t look like much – a clean, piano-finish hard plastic that tips the scales at a mere 6 ounces, with optics offset to the side and protected with a handy rubber cover. There’s also a focus knob for the lens, ventilation along the side panels and an exhaust fan next to the lens. Unfortunately there’s no tripod thread on the back or base of the projector, unlike the BeamBox.

An integrated PMP chipset allows for media playback of various video, music and picture formats, with 1GB of onboard storage. There’s also a built-in speaker, small but enough to deliver adequate sound output or music in a quiet and small-sized room. If 1GB isn’t enough for you, there’s a microSD card slot for extended storage, and it has the usual I/O connectivity from Mini USB (to access the internal memory), a 3.5mm composite A/V jack, 3.5mm stereo headphone jack and an AC power connector; AAXA included an optional accessories adaptor, for hooking up your iPhone/iPod iTouch/PSP, and they also offer a VGA convertor for linking your computer to the projector.

BeamBox Evolution R1 Pico-Projector Review

The R1 offers a choice of two modes. At its simplest, the pico-projector works as a basic A/V display, taking composite video and stereo audio input. This will work with pretty much any standard source, whether a portable DVD player, camcorder or even a laptop with a suitable adapter. More interestingly, the R1 also has an onboard media player, turning it into a standalone system rather than one tethered to an external source.

Holding down the play/pause button boots up the media app, which offers a choice of Music, Video, Photo, eBook, Explorer and Settings. The GUI is basic but reasonably attractive, and hides a fair degree of functionality. Audio tracks can be organized by artist, album or genre, together with all tracks and playlists (the latter of which can be copied over to the R1, but not created on-device), with an on-screen equalizer animation, bitrate and ID3 details. Controls include play/pause, track skip and fast-forward/rewind, together with volume.

Designed to work with the new KDDI iida G9 mobile phone and the upcoming iidda range, the Toshiba manufactured handset uses DLP display technology. It can project a 480x320 image of between six and 63 inches onto a flat surface or wall up to 8.2 feet (2.5m) away.

While the pico projector’s built-in 0.5W speaker won’t exactly leave your ears bleeding, it should be sufficient to handle small office presentations or home movies. The battery provides for up to 130 minutes of continuous viewing and can be fully charged in less than two hours. The projector accepts 3.5mm 4-pole and VGA input, making it compatible with the Cyber-shot S001, CA001, Wooo Keitai H001 and the Exilim Keitai W63CA, W63H, W62CA and W62H.

While the pico projector is not for lounge viewing, it's handy showing off holiday video and snaps, or similar occasions, stored on the phone – as long as your friends or work colleagues are prepared to stay awake.

The KDDI pico projector measures 50×112×18.3mm and weighs 128g. A limit of 3000 projectors will be released in Japan, with each costing about 39,600 yen (about USD$415) or, if you buy the iida G9 cell phone, just 19,800 yen (about USD$205).

Century Tech PCLit Picoprojector uses Displaytech FLCOS Microdisplay

Displaytech, the supplier of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal on Silicon (FLCOS) microdisplays, announced today that Century Tech (HK) Limited, a leader in professional display industry, launched the PCLit pico projector a new member of the PicoLit projector series. The optical engines used in the PCLit were designed by iView Limited and both the VGA projector (IPL631G) and SVGA (IPL831G) use Displaytech’s FLCOS microdisplays. These PCLit pico projectors were announced at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2009 - spring section.

“We are very proud of the commercialization of PicoLit series of products and in particular PCLit luxury. It is a perfect example of a very practical application of pico projectors. We have a strong belief that these new pico projector products will ignite the market.” said Terry Kwok, Century Tech CEO.

The PCLit luxury version is best suited as companion projector for notebook and desktop computers as it uses a single USB cable for both power and video signal. It supports mirror and extended modes. The computer screen can be used for work and at the same time project worksheets, videos, and games. PCLit is a perfect device for both business and personal uses.

We believe that our FLCOS micorodisplay’s superior image quality and low power consumption coupled with iView’s optical design create the opportunity for products like the PCLit pico projectors which are battery powered and small.” said Richard Barton, CEO of Displaytech.

Micron acquires DisplayTech, moves into Micro-Projector Business

Memory chip maker Micron Technology has acquired DisplayTech, a manufacturer of small display screens for camera viewfinders and display chips for Pico-style projectors, for an undisclosed amount, and is using some of its new assets to introduce today a new microdisplay panel small enough for placement in handheld devices like iPods or BlackBerrys.

The new panel was said to be a wide-screen quarter VGA (WQVGA) microdisplay solution designed to enable portable video and image projection for applications including head-mounted display products and embedded cellphone projectors.

It is based on ferroelectric liquid crystal on silicon (FLCOS) technology, which Micron said produces superior image quality and color fidelity to other competitive micro-projector display solutions.

The device is offered as a single chip and is said to require “minimal power” to operate.

“The FLCOS microdisplay technology that Micron has acquired from DisplayTech has demonstrated success in the market, clearly evident by the fact that more than 21 million panels have shipped in portable consumer electronic products,” stated Abid Ahmad, Micron’s silicon and systems group director. “With Micron now delivering this technology, we are well-positioned to provide our customer base with global support and an even stronger R&D platform to further extend FLCOS microdisplay technology.”

The chip consumes only 85 milliwatts, and is said to be suited for applications where portability and battery life is most critical. The product adds to Micron’s DisplayTech FLCOS microdisplay projection panel line, which includes QVGA, VGA, SVGA and WVGA panels.

Micron said the chief attribute of its FLCOS microdisplay approach is fast switching speed, which is said to be up to 100 times faster than traditional LCOS technology. This is important for using field sequential color, which, unlike color filtering, produces full color on each individual pixel, blending color by very rapidly integrating red, green and blue frames in sequence, Micron said.

When compared to Texas Instruments’ micromirror technology, FLCOS allows for “a fully integrated microdisplay solution, combining the display panel, memory, image processing and light driver control into one chip.” This reduces size and power requirements.

DisplayTech, which is based in Longmont, Calif., has shipped 21 million small display devices to such companies as 3M and Kodak.

BenQ reveals GP1 Mini LED Projector

BenQ has just unveiled a brand new projector aimed at those who like to take their projection on the move. The lamp-less GP1 Mini LED Projector doesn’t need a PC to operate; it’s compatible with portable storage devices, smartphones and PMPs, and it weighs a scanty 640g.

Despite its small stature – you can see how well it would fit into your palm from the pic – it’ll happily lob out images of 80” in size. Beats the hell out of your telly, huh? Because of its PC-less design, it incorporates a 2W internal speaker as well as its own headphone jack, which could be great for taking on your hols, assuming you want to spend your vacation time watching 24 in the hotel room. Actually, that’s a thought...

While it falls just shy of the Pico projector category, the GP1’s added bulk means it packs in some of the features boasted by full sized projectors. You’ll find Auto play modes, auto keystone, auto search and Wall Colour Correction, as well promising a broader colour gamut than you’ll find on most projectors of similar size. It has a 4:3 native format, although 16:9 is an option.

Inputs include D-Sub, Composite and USB, while iPod/iPhone users can pick up an optional docking station.
